KOM OMBO
EDFU TEMPLES FROM
ASWAN
Temples Between Desert
and River
Journey north along the Nile to two of Egypt’s most captivating temples. Explore the dual temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus the Elder, and discover the Temple of Horus at Edfu — the best-preserved sanctuary of the Ptolemaic era. This private full-day tour reveals the artistry, mythology, and spiritual power that once shaped the banks of the sacred river.
ITINERARY
Morning Pickup — Aswan Hotel or Nile Cruise
Your private Egyptologist and driver will meet you at your hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan for the scenic drive along the Nile to Kom Ombo, passing through lush fields and tranquil villages that line the river.
Stop 1 — Temple of Kom Ombo
Perched dramatically on the riverbank, this unique twin temple was dedicated to two gods — Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility and might, and Horus the Elder, the falcon god of protection. Explore the perfectly mirrored halls, intricate carvings, and the remarkable reliefs depicting ancient surgical instruments — a testament to Egypt’s advanced knowledge of medicine.
Stop 2 — The Crocodile Museum
Just beside the temple lies the Crocodile Museum — an unexpected highlight of Kom Ombo. Inside, dozens of mummified crocodiles of all sizes are displayed, together with figurines and offerings once dedicated to Sobek. This small but striking museum brings ancient beliefs vividly to life, revealing how the ancient Egyptians venerated these powerful creatures as symbols of divine strength and protection.
Scenic Drive to Edfu — Through the Heart of Upper Egypt
Continue north along the Nile for about 2 hours toward Edfu. The journey reveals timeless scenes of rural Egypt — palm groves, farmers tending fertile fields, and small villages where life flows at the pace of the river itself.
Stop 3 — Temple of Horus at Edfu
A Ptolemaic sanctuary preserved on an exceptional scale — towering pylons, wide courtyards, columned halls, and dense reliefs that trace the mythological cycle of Horus and Seth. The temple presents one of the clearest examples of late Egyptian religious architecture, with its chambers, inscriptions, and monumental façades forming a complete and coherent ritual complex. Its level of preservation makes Edfu an essential reference point for understanding how sacred space functioned in ancient Egypt.
Return Transfer — Aswan Hotel or Nile Cruise, or Luxor
After exploring Edfu, relax as your private driver takes you back through the Nile Valley. You can return to your hotel or Nile cruise in Aswan, or — upon request — continue your journey north to Luxor, arriving by evening after a scenic drive along the river’s edge.
