CAIRO — GIZA
The Heartbeat of Civilization
CAIRO — FOUNDATIONS: FUSTAT (641 CE) AND AL-QĀHIRA (969 CE)Cairo — al-Qāhira in Arabic, meaning The Victorious — is the beating heart of Egypt and the largest city in Africa and the Arab world. Long before its founding in 969 CE by the Fatimids, this landscape already carried deep historical weight. At the Nile’s edge stood the Roman Fortress of Babylon, anchoring what is now Old Cairo. Following the Arab conquest in 641 CE, the nearby city of Fustat emerged as Egypt’s first Muslim capital and a major center of trade, learning, and faith. When the Fatimids established Al-Qāhira to the north, these earlier centers gradually merged, forming Greater Cairo — a vast metropolis where Roman, Coptic, and Islamic layers of history still stand side by side.
GIZA — OLD KINGDOM ROYAL NECROPOLIS: C. 2600 to 2500 BCEFrom ancient Kher Neter, meaning necropolis, Giza gained its modern name from the Arabic al-Jīzah, meaning edge or frontier — a fitting description for its position along the west bank of the Nile, facing ancient Memphis across the river. Giza emerged around 3100 BCE during the Early Dynastic Period, when Memphis served as Egypt’s first political and religious center. It rose to prominence in the Old Kingdom (2686–2181 BCE). During the Roman period (30 BCE–395 CE) and under Byzantine rule (395–641 CE), the region remained inhabited and agriculturally active. By the Islamic period (from 641 CE), Giza had become a thriving administrative and cultural center.Apart from its well-known fame, the area also holds some of Egypt’s earliest royal necropolises — Abu Sir, Saqqara, Dahshur, Abu Ghurab, and Abu Rawash. Nearby Kerdasa is renowned for its distinctive local cuisine and for its beautifully crafted textiles and embroidered garments, reflecting the village’s long tradition of handmade artistry.

CAIRO TAUGHT ME THAT CHAOS HAS ITS OWN RHYTHM, AND THAT BEAUTY CAN EXIST EVEN IN CONFUSION.
